用定冠词的疑问

1)Thisspecies of bird is decreasing in numbers every year.

2)Foreignfood aid has led to a drastic reduction in the numbers of people dying ofstarvation.

3)Werecord their types and changes in their numbers.

第一句innumbers, 没冠词，第二句in the numbers of有了定冠词，第三句in their numbers有了物主代词，

那样，我的问题是这种使用方法表示数目的numbers前到底需不需要加冠词或物主代词呢？

比如：我想知道老虎在数目上的变化

应该是说成:

Iwant to know the changes in numbers of the tigers 还是 thechanges in the numbers of the tigers 呢？

还是the changes in the numbers of tigers ?

哪一种才是正确的呢？

1）正确，in numbers/number 是习语，表示很多的，等于一个副词。这里单复数都对。

2）应该是in the number of people dying of starvation.我觉得这里number 应该用单数。我不知你从哪儿看到的这个句子。

3)正确，表示不一样的数字的变化。

I want to know the changes in the number of tigers. number 应该用单数，tigers前有无定冠词都对，有the,有特指含义。
